The producer of the Zenfone series of smartphones is ASUS. This series has given an incredible leap for this manufacturer in the smartphone industry. Devices in this series are known to function exclusively on the Asus Zen UI as its user interface. They possess Android Operating system and works on Intel Atom processor, and has classified into first and second generations.
Our contender for today, the Asus Zenfone C ZC451CG falls into the former category. Also, Asus does not restrict its product base to just smartphones. They were first known for their excellent range of desktops, laptops and notebooks. Headquartered in Beitou District, Taipei, Taiwan, they supply to over 32 countries and has around 400 service partners in total. They are doing a pretty credible job of continuously updating its Zenfone series within months. We’ll dive into the details of the Zenfone C ZC451CG with a descriptive review.
DESIGN & DIMENSIONS
The device has a very simple and familiar look. There is nothing classy or protective about the outer casing. But, for such low price, this is pretty acceptable. The overall dimensions of the smartphone are 136.5 x 67 x 10.9 mm. It weighs around 149 g and felt right in our palms. Also, it comes in three different colours Black, White and Red. Hence, with regards to build and design, this smartphone is reasonably decent.
The Asus Zenfone C comes with an IPS Capacitive touch screen. This display is 4.5 inches in size and has 16 M colour that adds a vibrant dimension to an otherwise classic build. The display has a resolution of 480 x 854. Also, it has a pixel density of 218 ppi, which we found crisp enough for generic usage. It functions smoothly with the multi-touch feature. The screen comes with extra protection from the Oleophobic coating that hs specially designed for this smartphone. Standard anti-reflective coatings are usually quite greasy, but with an oleophobic coating, you’ll find you won’t need to clean the glass as often throughout the day.
OS AND PROCESSOR
The device sports the Android OS v 4.4.2 ( Kitkat ) just like the other Zenfones which function on the Android OS. It runs on the Intel Atom chipset which is unique to only the Asus smartphones. Also, the central processing is taken care by a Dual – Core processor. It runs at a speed of 1.2 GHz. It uses the Asus Zen UI as the software interface. The graphics interface is maintained using PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU. It is pretty decent in the specification for average usage.
This phone comes with an 8 GB internal memory. User usable memory would be lesser than 8 GB though. But it’s refreshing to see that it has an external micro SD or TransFlash slot for expandable memory requirements. The maximum limit to which the smartphone supports expansion is 64 GB.
A slightly disappointing feature though is its little 1 GB RAM. On our average usage, the transitions were smooth, although the heavier games took the time to load.
Asus Zenfone C comes with a non–removable Li–Ion battery. This battery has a capacity of 2100 mAh. Knowing this, we can easily assume that it would surely have a below average standby as well as talk time. So, overall on the battery end, this phone reads as below average.
This smartphone has both fronts as well as a rear camera. The rear camera is 5 MP and shoots sharp photos in proper lighting. It’s assisted by an LED flash and Auto Focus features. Also other enhancements that follow are the Digital Zoom and white balance. Now, the front camera is a great disappointment with its VGA type camera. It only has a little 0.3 MP pixel clarity. The front camera does not possess a flash. And ironically it is the front camera which requires such extra features for at least reasonable selfies.
The real feature of sound is that it support some audio file formats in comparison to its fellow competitors. The ringtone types it supports is Polyphonic and Vibration. The audio formats supported are 3GP, AAC, MP3, MIDI, WAV and AMR. It has a well functional FM radio connectivity too. It also comes with reasonable loudspeakers if not great ones. The audio jack is the standard 3.5 mm slot.
The various video recording formats compatible with this smartphone are 3GP, H.263, H.264 and MPEG. And as mentioned earlier the rendering of the videos are taken care by the GPU and offers smooth playback.
This smartphone comes with the Dual sim facility. Both the sims are compatible with the GSM connectivity and are of the micro-sim type. One of the sims supports 3G. It has other essential network features like GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It connects using 802.11 b/g/n as its Wi-Fi standard. The Bluetooth version which helps transfer files wirelessly is v4.00.
