HTC One M9- Great phone with a not-so-great camera

Introduction:

The company previous flagship HTC M9 was beautifully crafted and was a massive hit among the audience. HTC One M9 was announced on 1st March, 2015 and was released date in India on 10th April 2015. The device got a lot of upgrades in an all new design which set the industry on fire. HTC carefully crafted this phone to stand out in the crowd of competitors. The device is yet another installment in the metal body series. The phone when placed next to the M8 looks very stylish and has a sharper look even though there are only a few minor changes. The M9 has a few downgrades like the Duo-Camera which was present in the M8 model but is nowhere to be seen in this model for some reason.

Though, there are only a few changes in the design aspect, the hardware and software have got a new facelift. This results in a good reasonable phone with improved performance. Let us have a look at a few features of the HTC One M9.

HTC One M9 Review:

HTC One M9 is available only in the Android version unlike the HTC One M8 which was available in both Android and Windows versions.

M9 Design:

The changes in the design are unnoticeable by many but the sharper cuts give it a premium look. The phone comes in an all metal body with a glass screen display. The power button is pushed to the right. The volume rocker is also placed on the right side right above the power button and above this is the slot for SIM card. The left looks empty except for the SD card slot that is present on the top.

There are not many changes on the display front, it is the exact display screen found in M8. You won’t be able to tell the difference between the two when the screens are facing you. The top and bottom bezel spaces are occupied by speakers. HTC has ditched the home button again like it did with the M8.

Display Specifications:

It houses a Super LCD3 capacitive 5 inch display screen with a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The screen does not get an upgrade at all and it has been this way for the past three years now.  Buyers are getting a little impatient regarding this issue. The screen does not get an upgrade but it looks great and the display is good though not remarkable. The phone does not perform very well in the outdoor conditions.

The phone also has a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass guarding the screen and protecting it from scratches and cracks.

The display has a very obvious greenish tint which is not liked by many.

The phone does not have a QHD display which certainly saves a lot of battery.

Battery Backup Life:

The phone has a non-removable Li-Po 2840 mAh battery which is perfect for this phone as this phone does not have a lot of HD features and such. The phone’s battery life is pretty amazing, it comes up to 2 days under normal use and the phone’s battery saving modes actually work and they can give you a maximum of even five days of battery life. The battery will also have longer life than the usual Li-ion batteries.

Camera Features:

For some reason, HTC decided to ditch the Duo-Camera feature in this model. The model has a 20MP pixel sensor camera which is just bleh. It is certainly better than the camera in other models but it hasn’t reached the mark yet. The camera produces better pictures when the lighting is perfect but in real world, no one roams around with perfect lighting following them all the time so it a real problem. The clarity of pictures is also not upto the mark.

The rear camera is covered with a sapphire glass for protection. It does not alter the color of the images.

The front camera is just of 4MP which is also quite on the downside.

HD video recording is available but lacks image stabilization.

The camera includes some features in addition to panorama. But those features just prove to be gimmicks are best when left alone.

HTC really needs to concentrate on the camera in the upcoming models to attract more buyers.

Memory Storage:

The phone has an internal memory of 32GB which can be expanded up to 128GB with a memory card. This is a great deal because its main competitors Samsun and Apple do not have microSD card storage facility for expandable storage. Samsung which used to provide a separate slot has also adopted this cheap trend. This will be a huge advantage for HTC.

It houses a 3GB RAM that delivers a lag-free performance.

Processor:

The phone’s highest grade Snapdragon Qualcomm MSM8994 processor is the strongest feature of the phone. The phone has an Octa-core processor which consists of one Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2 GHz Cortex-A57. The performance of the phone is unmatched and it functions a lot better than M8 which has only a Quad-Core processor. This is one of the greatest improvements that HTC has brought in to this device.

Operating System:

The phone runs on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) software with all new HTC Sense 7 User Interface. This interface is user friendly with a lot of customizations and it has some new features like the Home Sense features that tracks your apps usage and  rearranges the apps based on the use on your home screen and the remote control feature lets you control your TV and many other smart devices around the house. The phone has a few hassles which can be fixed by restarting the phone but software updates ought to fix them.

Conclusion:

The HTC One M9 is a great phone with exciting and working features with very less gimmicks that are limited to the camera alone. Performance wise it delivers an uninterrupted performance and lets you play all the high-end games without any problem. The battery life is also extremely good and so is the design.

The only downside is the camera which does not live up to the expectations.

Many users are satisfied with the purchase and performance of this phone.
