Android One is a venture started by Google. Just like its name suggests, this is mainly targeted at the people who are just venturing into buying their first smartphone. It has carefully designed so as make it extremely budget friendly and simple to use for the beginners. The entire manufacturing of this series of phones is taken care by partnering with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The notable feature here is that it runs on the stock Android software which almost resembles the actual Android OS used in the high-end phones. Another value that these Android One smartphones boast is their minimum hardware requirements. The Indian brands which first manufactured these phones were Micromax, Spice and Karbonn. So, let us get to know more in detail to decide if it is as worthy as it is projected to be from this Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi 498 review.
DESIGN & DIMENSIONS
With respect to the design, this phone comes with a very simple and ordinary looking outer casing. It does not look extremely classy but at the same time it doesn’t scream out “cheap”. It posesses a bar shaped frame. It has a length of 132mm and a breadth of 67mm. It is quite bulky looking having a thickness of 9.15mm. It comes in two colour variants of Black and White.
This smartphone sports a Capacitive touch screen. The size of that screen is around 4.5 inches. It comes with IPS FWVGA touch screen. It does not have a secondary display. The display resolution is 480 x 854 pixels and has a pixel density of 218 ppi. And it functions properly with the multi-touch feature. For this price, the display enhancements could have been slightly better.
OPERATING SYSTEM & PROCESSOR
This phone functions on the Android v 4.4.4 (Kitkat) which is upgradable to higher versions like the Android v 5.1.1 (Lollipop). The chipset used here is the MediaTek MT6582 which is quite reasonably good at almost smooth performance. The Central Processing is done by the Quad Core Cortex – A7 processor. This CPU ticks at a speed of 1.3 GHz. The onboard GPU is a standard Mali – 400MP2.
This Android One smartphone has a bare minimum internal storage capacity of just 4 GB. From this 4 GB, only 2.27 GB is actually available for downloadable apps. It can probably hold good for the productivity apps only. But, luckily there is provision for expanding the memory externally using a micro SD card. It is compatible up to 32 GB of expansion. Also, it is important to note that it only has a RAM memory of 1 GB. Hence, it is not suited to play games on this phone.
This smartphone comes with a Li – Ion battery which has a capacity of a below average 1700 mAh. Hence, both its standby as well as its talk time would be very meager. It has a standby time of just 160 hrs. And its talk time is around 17 hrs. While functioning on 3G, it can withstand up to 10 hrs.
It has both a front as well as a rear camera. The rear camera has 5.0 MP of clarity. Whereas, the front camera has just 2 MP pixel clarity. So, it is quite evident that we cannot expect to shoot good quality pictures with either of the cameras. But for this cost, this is quite expected. The other additional features of the back camera are that it has both digital zoom up to 5x and LED flash facility. It can shoot pictures with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. It also has the auto focus facility. As this smart phone’s interface is taken care by Google, it comes packed with a number of enhancement features. Some of them are lens blur, 360-degree photosphere and Panorama. These features are pretty brilliant for such affordable costs.
It has good audio playback. As this phone can be connected to external speakers you can enhance the audio quality. It comes with the FM radio facility too. The various formats that it supports are MP3 and Polyphonic extension files.
Video calling feature is available. This is a pretty good bargain at such low price. Also, video can be recorded in full HD.
The most highlighting feature of Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi 498 is that it is dual sim device. Both sims are of the micro-sim type. The connectivity mode for both sims is GSM. One sim works with 3G. But none of the sims are compatible with a 4G mode. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.0 is available as wireless connectivity features.
